Boudhanath
This is another Buddhist stupa but it is built on flat surface, and is one of the oldest and largest in Nepal. The stupa of Boudhanath lies 8 kilometers east of Kathmandu. This temple is also known by khasti. On this colossal and ancient stupa, are the all seeing eyes of lord Buddha. It is in various levels of terraces and it is painted in pastal, and is adorned with prayer flags. The unique aspect of nthis great Buddhist monument is that it is set in the octagonal Mandala design. Altogether 108 Buddha images and 147 insects of Prayer Whels adorn the base of the huge circular edifice. Another notable aspect of the area is the presence of about four dozens monasteries around it. Bouddhanath is an imposing private family houses. The basic feature of this great stupa is very much like that of Swambhunath stupa except its finial displaying. It is much bigger than Swambhunath stupa and lies in the valley floor, where as the former one stands on the hill top. This stupa said to have built by Lichhavi King Manadev in the 5th century A.D. The site is considered very much like Mecca for the Tibetan Buddhist and every year thousands of pilgrims from all over the Himalayan region visit the stupa. |
