Pashupatinath(Lord of the Animals)
One of the holiest shrines of all the Hindu temples in the world, considered is Pashupatinath. It lies 5 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu. Although the temple dates back to the 4th century, it was brought into present shape in the early 18th century. The temple has remained the presiding deity of rulling Nepalese Royalty. This two tiered magnificent golden temple with four silver doorways is unique example of the Nepalese temple architecture located on the banks of the Bagmati river. The temple is most noted for itsgold painted roof and silver coated doors. In South Asia with hundreds of Shiva Lingams, it is one of the largest Hindu Temple complexes. This temple site occupies an area of 281 hectors in total. The main entrance of this temple is in the western side facing a small street of Deo Patan market. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter this temple courtyard. So they are advised to go on the otherside of the river in the east to have a glimpse of the temple complex. In the middle of the spring(Feb- March) every year, there occurs a festival called Shiva Ratri. The word Shiva Ratri means the holy night of lord Shiva. On this day many devotees visit the Pashupatinath Temple and make the ceremonial fire. Most of the devotees spend the night offering prayers to Shiva. |
